Getting Unstuck

Do you feel stuck like life is passing you by but you’re not getting anywhere?

This post is all about helping you get unstuck in life and finding your path.

Feeling stuck

Why Do I Feel Stuck?

Often our past experiences, especially through childhood, how we were raised, the people we were around, and who we surround ourselves with today all shape our beliefs and effect how we live.

Limiting Beliefs

Having limiting beliefs can stump our present and limit our futures.

We become a faint shadow of ourselves and merely float by in life unable to take control and often not even realizing how much power we have over our lives and the ability we have to change it.

Around 10 years ago that was me.

I felt helpless, unsatisfied, and fed up.

Helpless to make any improvements in my life because I simply didn’t realize I could.

Sounds ridiculous I know but in my mind, Life just was as it was and I never questioned it.

The problem with that was I said yes to things I shouldn’t have and no to opportunities I should have.

If you’re feeling stuck chances are you’re ready for a major change.

You’ve likely been living on autopilot and now the plane has landed you are ready to go off and explore new possibilities.

Maybe you’re just not sure how, or perhaps you’re not even sure you’re able to.

How to get Un-Stuck

Self-reflection and self-awareness are both really important in understanding the ways in which you feel stuck, and how you can go about changing them to free yourself from this feeling.

Grab a notebook, open notes on your phone or simply take a moment to ask yourself these questions:

Journaling prompt getting unstuck

What areas of my life do I feel held back in?

Example 1: My job, I feel capable of more but I am too embarrassed to ask for a pay rise, and I don’t feel good enough to apply for a higher position even though I pretty much do the same work.

Example 2: I want to travel more but I never have enough money and it’s hard to get the time off work.

Example 3: I want to start my own business but I don’t know where to start.

  • Don’t over think this question, write whatever comes to mind first and then think a little more on it as you go.

The next step is to identify any limiting beliefs you have around those “stuck points”.

What negative beliefs do I have about those thoughts?

Example 1: My manager will think I am rude for asking. I won’t get the higher position because I am not good enough.

  • Stuck points: Not feeling good enough or worthy enough.

Example 2: I never have enough money, I can’t save because I don’t earn enough.

  • Stuck points: I can’t save. I will never have enough money.

Example 3: I don’t know where to start, it’s too confusing and I will never figure it out.

  • Stuck points: I’m not smart enough to understand. I will never make it happen.

Once you have identified where in life you are feeling trapped or stuck, and what thoughts are keeping you there we can begin to unpick those thoughts and reprogram your thinking towards taking the action to getting unstuck! Woop! 🙌

As an example, for me that moment was realising I wasn’t happy.

Not only was I not happy in the dead-end toxic relationship I was in, but I wasn’t happy with how I was living.

Living a bland life of waking up each day to do the exact same as the day before, and the day before that..

It was a never-ending loop of nothing.

Now it sounds miserable and to some extent it was, but I also had things I was happy with which made it difficult for me to realise I needed, and wanted change.

I liked being at home with my daughter so I didn’t think to change it however by doing so I wasn’t changing the fact I felt lost with my direction in life and also as a person, I didn’t know my own personality other than being a mum.

Reprogramming thoughts

Reprogramming Thoughts

In order to take the steps to changing your life and getting unstuck you must believe you are worthy and capable of the change.

And believe me, you totally are!

Use those thoughts and stuck points you have identified and work at rewording them.

For example: Instead of saying to yourself; I can’t save, I will never have any money to go on holiday. Replace it with; I save my money and spend within my means so I can afford a holiday.

You don’t need to change it completely but take out the “I can’t attitude” and the roadblocks because if you repeatedly tell yourself you can’t you will subconsciously believe you can’t meaning you can’t… see the problem.

Change the way you speak to yourself.

So it might be difficult to save but there are steps you can take to solve that problem but you must first believe and accept you can.

Take Action

Now let’s think about what can you change and what needs to change.

What small step can you take today to progress towards your goal, new life, or whatever it may be your wanting to get unstuck from?

You’re already on the right track simply by reading this and taking the time to think about what it is you want and what is currently stopping you from getting there.

If like I was, you are feeling lost, and stuck in the daily grind and hamster wheel that is society think about what actions you can now take to make the change.

Apply for a new job, leave a dead-end relationship, or open a new savings account.

Actions don’t have to be huge although if you want to jump right in by quitting your job and travelling the world 1010% go for it!

If your steps are smaller that’s amazing too!

Want a new career? Start by rewriting your CV or looking back at your stuck point to see where you can focus some attention on self-development to lead you to more intentional, purposeful work.

I would highly recommend daily journaling to continue to uncover ways you feel stuck and to identify new dreams and goals you wish to work towards.
